State Park Seasonal Positions and Internships

Campground Attendant: Assist in the overall operations and maintenance of the park, including at the park entrance, campgrounds, day use facilities, and rule and regulation enforcement. Operations of the park include, but are not limited to, cleaning comfort stations and camping cabins, collecting fees, providing customer service, cleaning fire grates, managing the reservation system, and providing information to the public. Maintenance duties can include string trimming, watering trees, pulling weeds, and power washing bathrooms. Other duties as assigned.

Parks/Grounds Maintenance Worker: Assists with maintenance of buildings and grounds within the park including mowing, weed whipping, spraying, watering, planting trees, fencing, and operating equipment such as mowers, tractors, skid loaders, weed sprayers, and trucks. Other duties as assigned.


Park Manager Intern: This internship will provide a candidate with essential on the job experience relating to the management of a state park and recreation area - including signage, audits, budgeting, and capital development. With a park district that contains high use in both camping and day-use, the candidate will acquire great experience. The intern will be involved with the daily management of Palisades State Park. With a large number of visitors, and wide variety of recreation offerings, this park will provide an intern with a well-rounded experience. The intern will also be involved with planning and development that relates to annual park management. The intern will be given the opportunity to develop new skills, lead seasonal employees, and utilize learned coursework/studies that relate to park management. A desire to provide great customer service and strong people skills will serve the candidate well. The intern will serve as a leader in the absence of the park manager. Sioux Falls is located about 20 miles Southwest of park. On site housing may be available, nights and weekends are to be expected. Applicant must be enrolled as a par-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply.

Park Naturalist Intern: Intern will help coordinate, create, and present environmental education programs for school groups and the general public of all ages within District 7. Programs will consist of a wide variety including mammals, birds, geology, and conservation. Naturalist will be involved with the development of park's program advertising: posters, social media, and public service announcements. Intern will also help with the coordination of special events and running the point-of-sale system. Past experience presenting programs is helpful, but training will be provided. Past experience in customer service can be helpful, but is not required. Housing may also be available.
